WordPress Development and Web Design for a Local Nonprofit Conservation Organization

Triangle Land Conservancy has been protecting land and water across the Triangle since 1983. The Durham-based nonprofit safeguards clean water, protects natural habitats, supports local farms and food, and connects people with nature through land protection and stewardship across Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Orange, and Wake counties.
TheeDigital built and hosted TLC’s previous website, and by 2024 that site was six years old. Content had outgrown its structure, pages were slow, and a 25 person staff had no clean way to show supporters who does what. TLC came back to us for a full rebuild, and the new site launched in January 2026.
TheeChallenge
The old site still held a wealth of conservation information, but it had stopped working the way TLC needed it to. Content had piled up over six years without a structure to hold it, pages were slow, and the navigation no longer matched how supporters actually looked for preserves, events, and ways to give.
The staff page was a specific problem. TLC’s team works across distinct departments, and the site had no way to reflect that. Visitors saw a flat list of names with no sense of who to contact about land protection, stewardship, or membership.
The rebuild also had to protect what was working. TLC had years of blog content, preserve pages, and search visibility built up on the existing domain, and none of it could be lost in the move to a new design.

Wireframes and Custom Homepage Design
We started in Adobe XD, wireframing the homepage, preserve and program content, and the staff structure before any visual design work began. That gave TLC a chance to settle navigation and content hierarchy while the layout was still inexpensive to change.
From there our designers built the homepage in Figma with separate desktop and mobile prototypes. The majority of TLC’s traffic comes from phones, so the mobile experience was approved as its own deliverable rather than treated as a scaled-down version of the desktop design.
The approved design carried TLC’s photography forward at full strength. Preserve imagery leads the page, with clear entry points into visiting, giving, and joining sitting directly beneath it.
The Results: A Rebuilt WordPress Site for a 25 Person Conservation Team
Triangle Land Conservancy relaunched on January 14, 2026 with a restructured, mobile-first WordPress website, a staff directory organized by department, and Events Calendar Pro powering their public events. TLC approved 22 additional hours during the build for a deeper content restructure and expanded page styles, and the team reports being happy with the look and feel of the finished site.

A Staff Directory Organized the Way TLC Actually Works
TLC’s staff of 25 works across distinct departments, and the previous site flattened all of it into one long list of names. We added a department taxonomy to the team content type and assigned every staff member to the right group.
On the new staff page, departments appear as headings with their team members displayed underneath. Someone with a question about land protection, stewardship, or membership can find the right person on the first try instead of guessing from a job title.
The structure is built for TLC to maintain on their own. Adding a new hire, moving someone between departments, or reordering how departments appear is a few clicks in WordPress, not a support ticket.
Events, Preserves, and an Easier Path to Give
Public programming is how TLC turns a first visit into a membership, so we integrated Events Calendar Pro to give the team full control over it. Guided hikes, volunteer workdays, and member events are published in one place, with recurring events and filtered calendar views handled by the plugin instead of by hand.
Preserve content was restructured so each property stands on its own page with the details a visitor actually wants before driving out: what is protected there, what the trails are like, and how to find the trailhead.
Giving stays in reach throughout. The donation path sits in the main navigation and at natural stopping points across preserve and program pages, so someone who arrived looking for a Saturday hike can leave as a member.
Built Mobile First, Easy for TLC to Run
Most people find TLC on a phone, often standing in a parking lot deciding where to hike. Every template was built mobile first, with tap targets sized for a thumb, forms that are short enough to finish one-handed, and preserve directions that open straight into maps.
The rebuild also gave us a chance to clean up years of accumulated content. Pages were reorganized around how supporters search rather than how the organization is structured internally, and the existing blog library and preserve pages were carried across without losing the search visibility TLC had built.
The site continues to run on TheeDigital’s managed WordPress hosting with daily backups, ongoing core and plugin updates, and uptime monitoring, so TLC’s staff can spend their time on conservation instead of website maintenance.
